Developing an Action Plan

Undertaking an energy audit will provide your practise with a clear picture of energy usage in your office and problem areas.   The next step is to develop an action plan which considers all aspects of your business.  This plan should be concise and easy to follow and could include the following:
  • Introduction - where we are at the moment (results of Energy Audit)
  • What do we hope to achieve? What are our goals?
  • What can we do immediately? eg turning lights off; switching off computers etc (Short term goals)
  • What can we do in the future? Eg buy energy efficient equipment, think carbon offset (long term goals)
  • Timeframe for review

Implementing an Action Plan

Your action plan should be implemented openly in the workplace.  If the plan forms part of workplace policy then all staff will be encouraged to do their bit to help. The implementation should therefore also involve explaining to staff why, how and what is to happen and when.
Staff should be able to communicate their feelings and ideas as they will feel more involved in the process and more inclined to do their bit!

Be realistic

It is better to start small with a few realistic objectives - tackle the easiest problems that offer the most immediate solutions.

Report on progress

It is important to report on the progress being made by your office - this can be done by email updates reporting on energy savings, paper recycling etc

Turning off the monitor screens at the end of the day, turning off power of all equipment and turning the lights off there were savings of 20-25% in 2007-2008 compared to the usage for the previous year. Crawford Architects
